Passion play 2010

One of the most colourful Dutch language traditions is the Passion Play, a custom for almost a century now, held in the impressive, completely covered open air De Doolhof theatre in Tegelen. For decades, tremendous interest has been shown both nationally and internationally in this impressive cultural event. In 2010, the Passion Play will take place for the nineteenth time. The actors and actresses mostly come from Tegelen and some come from South Limburg and North Brabant.

The Passion Play is a five-yearly cultural event, depicting the Easter story: Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his sentence, the Stations of the Cross and his death on the cross on Calvary's mountain. Originating from a Franciscan play, today this event has grown into a theatre event of international renown. The play attracts thousands of visitors from far and wide.

Since 1931, the Passion Play has been an established part of Tegelen society. Many generations have worked on this play. Due to their dedication and effort, they have laid the foundations for a unique and extremely personal experience of Jesus' life story. Working on the Passion Play is a great honour, even though it takes a tremendous amount of time and effort to put on such an event.
